Dana Elaine Owens, better than Queen Latifah the United States is a performer and actress. The work of Queen Latifah in film, television as well as music has earned numerous prizes. Queen Latifah was born in and lived in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita teacher who taught for Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens, Jr. a police officer. Her father and mother divorced after Latifah reached the age of ten. Latifah was a student at the Catholic school in Newark NJ and was educated through the Baptist Church. Latifah was her stage name at the time she turned eight. The word means extremely sensitive in Arabic. Always tall, the 5'10 tall Latifah was a power forward on her basketball team in high school. As part of a school production she sang Home from The Wiz. Latifah was part of the Ladies Fresh, a rap group which launched her career in beatboxing. Latifah was a part of with the Flavor Unit in its original model, consisting of an MC team and DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King recorded the rap of Queen Latifah, aka Princess of the Posse. He gave the recording to the host of Yo! MTV Raps is Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was signed by Latifah after hearing the song. The singer released her debut single Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
