Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born into a musical family on August 9th, 1963 in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel star Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and cousin of singer Dionne Warwick. Whitney's mother and her started singing professionally at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark at the age of fifteen years old. They sang the backing vocals on Chaka Khans 1978 track Im Every Woman. Her mother, Jermaine and Lou Rawls were a few of those who she sang with. But it is The Bodyguard (1996) that established her as one of the best-selling albums in pop music. The Bodyguard's performance as a film as well as its soundtrack weren't well-received however, the Dolly Parton cover I Will Always Love You and the album accompanying it were top of the charts around the globe for months. That same year she married the former New Edition singer Bobby Brown with whom she was the sole parent of their daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown in March 1993.
